There is no doubt that today is an important day. None of us can deny that. The choice we make today as a country, matters. What we decide today as a nation will say something about the collective consciousness of who we are.

And the outcome of this election will likely influence our personal lives today, and the lives of generations to come.

So, this is day is happening. This election is happening. Uncertainty is real. The fear and discord in the air are palpable. And, for many of us, anxiety is at an all-time high.

So how do we deal with it?

How do we protect our peace of mind while at the same time acknowledging the unrest and uncertainty that is happening?

Create space for inner peace

When we solely focus on the constantly changing conditions around us, our anxiety will likely increase. It’s undeniable that if we continuously stare at what scares us, we become more fearful. So, it’s important to know that how we think and what we focus on will always (yes, always) influence how we feel. Sometimes even more than what is happening around us.

Consider this: Most of us have at least one trash can in our home (probably several!). When that can is full (or when it smells) we take it out. All of the positive thinking, mantra chanting, or prayer, in the world, won’t take that trash out for you. You have to get up and take it out.

So, in other words, it’s okay to do what you have to do to protect yourself during this time. Our senses are a gift. They help us navigate through this ever-changing world we live in. Acknowledge what is happening. Pay attention and make the best choices you can — and take action when needed.

Control your senses the best you can, but don’t let your senses (or fear) control you. Don’t stare at the things that make you afraid right now. If something is increasing your anxiety you need to adjust your focus and make space for inner peace.

Here are just a few ideas of what you can do instead

  • Limit the amount of news you watch today.
  • Get outside and walk.
  • Talk to someone you love and admire.
  • Read something that inspires you.
  • Meditate
  • Do yoga
  • Help someone in need
  • Focus on the good around you and within you.

Lengthen Your Exhale

Even when all of the other efforts fail to produce inner peace, or to restore your mental balance — try lengthening your exhale. Your breath is intimately connected to your nervous system. And your exhale is in a dynamic relationship with your body’s relaxation response. Your breath is a natural and powerful antidote to stress and anxiety.

One of my favorite breathing practices is a simple four-part breath called, coherent breathing. To practice coherent breathing, sit upright in a comfortable position. Keep your body relaxed and eyes closed. If closing your eyes creates any anxiety keep them open.

  • Breathe in through your nose for a count of 5
  • Hold the inhale for a count of 5
  • Exhale through your nose for a count of 5
  • Hold the exhale out for a count of 5

Repeat until you feel your body soften and your mind relax. This breath is scientifically shown to soothe the fear response and stimulate inner stability, and calm.

Remember, the light does not battle with the dark.

The light removes the dark simply by being the light. By being aware of the inner peace that is always within you, you’ll be more equipped to let go of the fear and anxiety that keeps you from being useful to yourself and others.

“The more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good. Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom.” James Allen

Stay peaceful. The world needs you (and your light) right now.
